Independent Gas Transporters
Hi,
Not a regular poster....more a reader :-)
Anyhow we have a newish house, under 10 years old, and apparently we have an independent gas transporter. Until now we have stuck to the owner (Southern Electric). However with the latest news we are keen to shop around and get a cheaper deal if we can.
We have tried to do this before in 2008 and it ended up that we would have to pay 12p per day to get gas from another company. Does anyone know if this would be for life and whether it would be worth doing, or do we really have to be tied to the owner?
Cheers for the help

If the supplier charges a supplement for an IGT, then it would be for as long as you were with that supplier (and assumes the supplier doesn't change its terms)
Do a check using a comparison site to find the cheapest supplier.
Find out if that supplier charges extra for an IGT, and if they do, add that to the cost quoted. If they are still cheapest, switch. If not try the next supplier ...
You are free to choose any supplier, even though you are supplied via an IGT0 -
I believe only British Gas don't charge extra if you are with an IGT.
I tend to factor in about £40 on top of whatever the comparison sites say to allow for it.
Almost none of the price compare sites allow for it.
Considering almost all new builds in the last decade are supplied by an IGT it is something they should be getting on top of.0 -
You believe wrong.
Fair enough.
If i believe wrongly then reply with something useful as to why i'm wrong.
The reply isn't overly helpful to either myself or the OP.
It also won't help myself or anyone else when i post going forward.
To the OP:-
The last time i checked, and I'm on an IGT, BG was the last of the "big 6" to no longer charge for IGT as the rest had phased in charges.
I'm fairly certain that at least 4 (Eon, NPower, EDF and Scottish Power) have not reversed this position.
SSE didn't have an IGT as such but they did have a "administrative fee" that pretty much amounted to the same thing (for my area anyway).
I averaged out the IGT cost of the above and it worked out in or around the £40 mark annually on the bill.
I did rule out Ebico and Ovo from my reply, incorrectly, on the basis that the last time i checked neither really existed / were competitive.0 -

EDF Have not charged one since last year.0 -
Odd, as My EDF bill begs to differ (for online s@ver v2)
Edit:-
I've also checked the latest tariff and it has this clause in it:-
EDF Energy - Blue +Price Promise April 2014
Notes: If your gas is supplied by an Independent Gas Transporter, an IGT charge will apply.
Additional Edit:
It appears that EDF, at least, don't have an IGT on some tariffs but they do on others.
So we are both sort of half right :-)0 -

Google is your friend
Of the big 6, Eon are the only company that charge about £40 per year (plus VAT) and then only for 3 specific IGTs.
nPower is the only other company (of the big 6) that charges a surcharge for IGTs. They charge about £10 per year (plus VAT)

Do you have a link please?
Here are EDFs full terms and conditions:
http://www.edfenergy.com/products-services/for-your-home/documents/general-prices/energy-supply.pdf
and here are some specific terms applicable only to the Blue+ Price promise April 2014 tariff:
http://www.edfenergy.com/products-services/for-your-home/documents/product-terms/BPPA14.pdf
I may be missing it, but I can't see the term you have quoted in either document. :huh:0 -
To be fair i got it off a linking site:-

The standard tariff doesn't have an IGT and that is clearly stated.
I've tried to call EDF a couple of times to cross check this but apparently they don't like to answer the phone much any more.0 -
You see if your network was owned by National Grid..(or similar) then you wouldnt have to put up with this and would have free and transparent choice. Still thats OFGEM to blame again. They licenced this fiasco.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
