USA East Coast beaches September

OK team, I would love to hear your suggestions for good, airport-accessible beaches on the east coast of the US, including the southern half of it. There are obviously many, many from which to choose and I'm trying to narrow it down. I am from America but in the midwest we have rippling seas of corn, not water. Here are the details:

- Flying out of Birmingham UK airport to Indianapolis (holiday destination of the stars), staying in Indiana for a week and a half, then flying to a yet-to-be-chosen destination near a beach, stay for 2-3 days, fly from there back here to B'ham

- I just want to be able to swim around in water that is reasonably warm, and by that I don't mean Torbay warm. Rockpools would be nice but not required.

Apart from chilly Maine, I have been to Outer Banks, NC (liked the area but couldn't swim due to storms) and Florida. The Florida beach we were at was great but it was July and so, so hot. I actually like hot weather but it must've been over 100F, w/ sun reflecting off water & sand for extra glare. That is a bit much even for me - but maybe Florida is a little more tolerable in September? Anyone know?

Thank you in advance for any contributions, and if you ever want to tour Indiana, let me know and I will give you all the info you need!

To clarify - I do mean September as in next month, not 2013. We're going the middle two weeks, provided I can get it all booked.

Have you tried the Florida pan handle, some great beaches there and also over into Mississippi, one of our favorite places is Biloxi - you can fly into Biloxi / Gulfport and be on the beach in 15 mins

Thanks for the tip - I have had a look at that area but I think it will be too hot for my husband to tolerate. He often finds English summers too hot (!!), so I think Florida and Mississippi are out for September.

I think it's going to be Hilton Head island, South Carolina. Temps should be bearable for him but the water will still be warm for me.
