Old bank records

I need help and advice on how to get bank statement dating back to 1990. I banked with Barclays. Would they still hold the records and my account was closed 10 years ago.

    Have you asked them?
  • I doubt it - most won't keep records that long.

I'd be extremely surprised if they still have statements from 22 years ago, and if you closed the account ten years ago they might not have any record that you ever had an account with them.

Why do you want records going back 22 years ?
  • Probably a case of a miss-sale ?

They certainly are not obligated to keep records that far back.

They might be able to trace the records - for a cost.

In fact, the Data Protection Act requires them to purge records as appropriate and not keep data where not required.

Two weeks ago I received a completely unexpected and unsolicited council tax rebate for a house I moved out of in 1996, in a different local authority to the one I live in now. The refund was made to the bank account that had been used for the direct debits back then, which fortunately is the one I still have. So that council have obviously been keeping records of my name, new address and bank account number all this time despite me no longer living there.
