selling on ebay tips

Someone has given me some stuff to sell on ebay for them, I've sold a couple of things before but that what a while ago so I know what to do but is there anything I should know?

I've got stuff like ornaments, little figures, shotglasses etc.

Kinda hard to describe some of this stuff....

Just take very good clear photos - that should help. Also try and find manufacturer's names.

Ornaments and figurines need excellent packaging - boxes, preferably double-boxed. You cannot disclaim responsibility for breakage in the post so make sure the item is packed so you can throw it onto a concrete floor without shattering.

If you can absorb packaging costs into the start price and find cheap sources of robust materials as buyers do mark harshly on postage prices. Similarly for dispatch - things have got very tight, you need to be able to post out next day or the day after so plan things around your other commitments. You're making just as big a commitment selling on eBay as anything else so being able to honour your sales promptly is a big plus.

As a private seller, be responsive and attentive to the buyers' needs. They are equal and perhaps more equal partners in the transaction, and as the person paying for something deserve dignity and respect, particularly if something goes wrong that is your responsibility (everything involving getting the item to them in one piece).

Business sellers have far more responsibilities after sale - those will thankfully be absent from your liabilities but you might like to keep in mind that a buyer can leave you feedback - so you need to make sure to keep them happy.

No, but you can self host, use something like photobucket and use HTML to drop it into the text

Recorded might make your stars suffer as buyers tend not to like it, it is also pretty expensive for a service that in many areas doesn't work.

    Have a read of this

Recorded is inconvenient for the buyer - most people would be out during the day when the post is delivered, so it means picking something up from a sorting office (re-delivery is available but requires a signature, making it a bit circular if you are not in most days to collect; I don't think there is a Saturday service - but realistically, even if there is, people buy online for the convenience of delivery - they are not going to be happy to give up their Saturday to take delivery of an item which cost them a few pounds).

For many people that equates to 'if I have to go and pick it up anyway, I might as well buy it on the high street'. INR happens - recorded delivery doesn't insure or expedite the item, and it is not really appropriate for eBay items. It will push up your costs, particularly on low value items, and you're therefore asking the buyer to pay for something that is of no benefit - and a considerable hindrance in some situations - to them. That's not going to score you points.

For items worth less than £46 just get a proof of posting which insures you up to that amount in case of loss. Above £46 it is better to use Special Delivery - it's worth a buyer's while to pick it up from the delivery office at that point or staying in to sign for it.
