Deals that aren’t actually deals

I was doing some of my weekly online research for my groceries and came across an interesting “deal” with the help of mySupermarket’s comparison and price history graphs.
Sainsbury’s currently has 4X440ml Stella Artois cans on 2 for £8.00, which they claim is a £1 saving as the regular price is £4.50 for one. You can see on mySupermarket that it’s not even really a good deal. The regular price of this is £3.75 in Asda and £4.00 in Tesco. You can also see on the price graph that £4.00 is the average price of one of these over the past year anyway.

Anybody else notice any of these type of deals that aren’t really deals?

Happens all the time.
For example Polo's had been £1.00 for months. Price is hiked to £1.50 one week.
The following week it's dropped back to £1.09 along with the supermarket claiming it's made another amazing price cut.
Luckily for the supermarkets there are still plenty of people out there willing to accept their deceit.0 -
Sadly lots of "deals" aren't really "deals" and some vulnerable ones will get conned.
Wine offers (half-price) have been "cheating" people for ages.
Watch Morrison's BOG2F offers (some are good at BOG2F) and watch the next day after the offer ends!!!
Loads more, but I'll just post 2 examples.
I cheat the supermarkets as much as possible and they way they treat their "customers" means I don't need to feel guilty.
Good thread and looking forward to reading posts.

There is another version of that one. An item is £1; it then appears on "offer" at 2 for £1-60 - then the offer finishes and the item goes to it's (new !) non-offer price of £1-250 -
Asda has Huggies a lot of nappies on either 2 for £9.00 or 2 for £18.00. If you look at the price graphs on mySupermarket even on these offers the price they have for each is higher than the average price it’s been for the past year. The 2 for £9.00 offer is still 3% higher than the average year price and the 2 for £18.00 actually costs you 10p more than the average price. So not just food, also nappies! Maybe if we cause enough fuss over this we can get the retailers to be more honest

I've noticed that a lot with large bags of crisps and tubes of Pringles lately. Do they think we've forgotten the regular prices???
Sensations are on Asda website at £1 (what I would normally be prepared to pay) or 2 for £3.50!

It always used to be the case that you had to watch out as some of the offers weren't as good as they looked at first sight, but its happening more and more.
Watchdog have covered this a few times recently and the consumer lawyer on there stated some of the offers clearly breached regulations. But given that all the big stores do it, it would be a brave government that took them to task.
This is why we more and more shop in Aldi and to a lessor degree in pound shops and Lidl. I also use some local farm shops as well. Prices aren't up and down each week and its much quicker, easier and simpler to get what you need for a price you can afford without having to do a load of calculations each time you go in lol.
I also believe the quality of all the supermarket own brands has seriously gone down.
I just watch online for very good offers and take advantage of them.
I did notice prior to chrimbo last year not nearly as many offers in the run up period as in previous years and those offers that were there weren't great.
I would never consider going to one of the big stores for a full weekly shop I just couldn't afford to. But I could and in fact often do no shopping in them at all and could easily manage with just aldi and my local farm shops, like the other poster said I love to just take advantage of their glitches and offers lol.

Another one is Cif Multi-Purpose Spray.
Tesco has this on their site as part of the big price drop and sells it for £2 (instead of £2.75). While they may have dropped the price it’s not really a drop when you look on mySupermarket and consider that it’s much cheaper in Sainsbury’s (£1.50) and the same price in Ocado but on a 2 for 1 offer there. even Waitrose have it cheaper (3 for 2) and Asda has it at £2 as regular price0 -
I've noticed that with Lurpack spreadable in Sainsbury's. It was £2.58 a couple of weeks ago and then it went up to £3 in the space of a week. Now it's on offer for 2 for £5.0

Stella Artois is the classic because despite the big advertising budget and the " Reassuringly expensive" claims it's ALWAYS on some sort of offer somewhere.0

You do have to be careful not to be taken in by their trickery.
