1and1 demanding money

Basically I've had several rather threatening letters from 1and1. They are demanding I pay up for a domain name renewal, for a domain name I bought several years ago and never really used.
I had forgotten about the domain to be honest and the card that I had registered with 1and1 had expired. So when they tried to "auto-renew" it, they froze my use of the domain name (fair enough) and I sent me these letters telling me to pay up with a different card. Obviously I didn't want the domain anymore, so I cancelled my account with them and told them I wouldn't be paying for it.
However they are still saying that I owe them this money - they are basically demanding money for a service I never used. I told them this but they keep saying I have to pay up. I'm pretty determined not to give them anything, even though its only a small amount of money.
So has anyone had this problem before and are they really going to refer me to debt collection (they have said this in the letter)?
Any advice or anyone who has had this before would be appreciated. Thanks

Think you are stuck here because they have a strict cancellation policy and have to cancel by logging into your account.0
