Use credit card to buy Lottery Tickets

As far as I'm aware you get charged interest as is cash even if bought at a till in supermarket, the tills have to separate it and gets classed as gambling. Seen so many caught out this way. Use a debit card

Just to throw it out there, if you're having to spend on a credit card, maybe gambling isn't the best option?

I always buy the lottery on CC yet to have it recorded as anything but a normal transaction.

Rubbish.

The credit card company knows what type of shop a transaction is from based on the merchant's category code, which in the case of Waitrose would be that of a supermarket or grocery store. They are completely unable to distinguish a transaction for £40 of lottery tickets from one for £40 of groceries.

However if you go into a casino and buy chips on your card, it will appear as being a gambling establishment to the credit card issuer and most likely attract the attendant fee. It is entirely possible that you could as a result go into a casino, buy drinks on your card and get charged a cash fee because of the merchant category code being the same. The card company can't see WHAT you buy, only WHO you buy it from.

As such the OP's question is a waste of time. Any shop that does not accept credit cards to purchase lottery tickets is doing so because of a policy of their own, not because of anything intrinsic to credit cards (and, for that matter, I haven't ever seen a single shop that will refuse credit cards for lottery tickets).

Does it show as a payment to Camelot or National Lottery or does it show up as a payment to the retailer? If it's the retailer I would not have thought of it as a problem.

If you buy a lottery ticket from a supermarket, it will not show up as a payment to Camelot/the National Lottery any more than it would show up as Pedigree Chum if you bought dog food.

If the lottery ticket are bought from a retail shop than it will be counted as a purchase and not as payment to Camelot .

All Co-Op's do not accept credit cards for lottery tickets, I think it's the same on scratch cards.

I used to work at a co-op in Leeds and we was told not to take credit card payments for lotto or scratch cards.
