Balance Transfers For OTHER People

Hi folks

I helped out my boyfriend a few months ago as he needed to pay for insurance for his job, so I paid for it on my card. He's been paying it off by standing order, but ideally I'd like him to take on the debt himself, for obvious reasons.

Is it possible to pay off cards in other people's names in balance transfers, or does it have to be one of your own? I've done BTs myself in the past and don't recall having to give any other details than the account ref and provider, but perhaps there was the assumption of it being my name...

Thanks for help.

You can transfer a balance from anyone elses card provided they are not issued by the same bank.

So for example, you cannot transfer a balance from one Barclaycard to another Barclaycard. But what you can do is transfer a balance of £xxx from your Barclaycard to his MBNA card, as an example, so that the debt becomes his.
  • That's good to know. Thanks.

Not necessarily. It depends on the card issuer.

Santander, for example, will not allow balances to be transferred from a card in anyone else's name, even an additional cardholder or spouse.

So you need to check the terms carefully.

  • Oh, okay. Still, he's not likely to be accepted anywhere anyhow, so I guess it's a moot point.
