Steam Iron or a Steam Generator Iron

Hi
I hope that someone can help me make a decision, as I am so very confused!
My Steam Generator Iron has packed up. To be honest, I have never been that impressed with it. It's a Morphy Richards make and I've had it about 4 years, during which time, I seem to have needed to replace the anti-scale cartridges constantly.
So, I need a new iron and am thinking that maybe I might be better off with just a Steam Iron? Although, my last steam iron was very heavy to use, especially when it was full up with water.
Then again, I am also wondering if improvements have been made with the Steam Generator Irons, especially regarding the scale build-up issue.
I didn't really want to spend more that £80 but if someone were to suggest something fantastic for a bit more money, then I could stretch to it.
I would be really grateful of any suggestions!

Thank you Santer! I really appreciate your suggestions!
That 2nd one, the Morphy Richards one, looks almost identical to the one I have already and I haven't been impressed.
Can I ask, why you recommended the Russel Hobbs one at Asda? Have you used it yourself?
Many thanks0 -
I've just checked out the reviews for the Russel Hobbs Iron on Amazon and they are not that great.
Thank you for the suggestions though!0 -
I was lucky enough to be able to trial and then keep a Philips Perfectcare Steam Generator earlier this year it does retail significantly more than the £80 you want to spend at approx £200.
However, I am not just saying this because I got to trial and then keep it, but it is fantastic, so easy to use, glides over everything, one setting does all fabrics, so no adjusting temperatures and chancing if it's too hot, doesn't burn anything, infact as part of the trial we had to leave the iron on a silk scarf for 5 minutes just to prove the point. I would not go back to a regular iron am a total convert, so if you can either stretch your budget or find this on offer anywhere I would seriously consider it or a similar product, it has made ironing so much easier.:hello:0 -
Oh, that sounds lovely Rainey! Lucky you getting to trial it!!
However, that really is beyond by budget. I appreciate you suggesting it though. Thank you!
I am thinking of buying a Philips Azur GC4410/02 Steam Iron at Argos. It has excellent reviews and is half price at the moment. £37.49. Seems like a good offer.0 -
I iron for an ironing business about 10-15 hrs a week...I know lucky me
But my boss says that steam generators are too costly in the long run, so we don't use them and she buys us all these. Never had a problem apart from over use!

Also have a look at the GHI reviews on loads of irons, it may help or confuse.

My mums got the Phillips Azure and its not wow but its good, I've used it before. I'd probably get one. One last thing Debs are having big iron sale and reviews.

I have(in the past week) bought a Phillips Azure and am finding it OK(better than my old Phillips anyway) Can't really comment much more on it, as it is still early days apart from saying that the flex/lead is a really good length
Mines the 4890 Azure though, not the one shown on the Debenhams link(bought from amazon)0 -
Wow, thank you so much clairibel! There are very helpful links indeed. Although you are right, I could very well end up being more confused. Mind you, it really doesn't take much nowadays! Good to hear from someone who actually does Ironing as a business. I guess that you will really know what is a good iron and what is not.
Thank you too devildog. I would be very interested to know how you get on with your new iron!0 -
I think this is mine... I got it through a Bzz campaign 2-3 years ago:

Nothing beats it, seriously - I've been so impressed. I've never had to do any kind of maintenance on it and it just works so extremely well. A new lodger moved in recently and got quite overexcited about how neatly and easily it flattened his fireman uniform! :rotfl:
I couldn't go back to a normal steam iron after this.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Thank you Badger_lady! Looks lovely but a bit more than my budget will go to.
Like the sound of your new lodger though!0
