Hi,

We pay £60 a month for our leccy, Southern Electric want us to pay £82 a month, our balance is £199.48.

We are on Economy 7, we used 1879 units in day from 1st Jan - 21st March, is this usage high ? We are charged 10p per unit in day, we used 270 units at night at cost of 4p per unit.

We turn most things off at night, hubbys pc is left on, i try not tumble dry and put washing on rads, I turn shower off too. Our house needs a new front door and some windows replacing but we have also has a lot of repair work done already to improve heat escaping.

Ive just done a comparison on USwitch and Npower can save us £6 a month on each Gas and Leccy which is the best the site came up with.

Should we pay £82 a month to get our bill down or leave it at £60 ?

Thanks :)

I doubt Southern will give you much choice unless you pay off the £200 odd on the account.

I don't know how big your property is, but if it is an average size or even slightly smaller then average it doesn't seem excessive.

We really done know how people an afford to live these days, i dont think we get charged a lot per unit used but we use a lot, we have 3 lcd tv's on standby all the time and hubbys pc is on all the time. Hubby says he will pay a bit more off over the next couple of months to get it down.

As you have gas I assume you have gas CH?

I would doubt that it is worthwhile for you to be on Economy 7 as you only use 12% of your electricity at night rates.(on E7 you pay a higher daytime rate.

If your rates are exactly 10p & 4p your bill would be £198.70.

If you were not on Economy 7 if you could get your electricity for under 9.2p a unit you would be better off. - and that shouldn't be difficult.

Thank you very much for that, we will ask Se to take us off E7 for a while to see if it makes a difference.

    Thanks Cardew

Just got off the phone from SE, a very nice man has arranged that our E7 meter be changed to a General Domestic Meter. The flat rate will be 9.05p per unit ex vat. Our service charge will drop from 10.24p to 6.95p.

    Thanks for your advice
