UPVC sash windows

I need to replace old sashes with new UPVC ones on a coastal house in Cornwall. Has anyone any experience of suppliers, manufacturers, in Cornwall. Should the windows have stainless steel fixings, screws to combat the salt? Aluminium v steel reinforcing? Do coloured/painted finishes last? I have looked at several manufacturers and initially they are all comparable, but checking the spec. they all seem different.I want the windows to last and to look good as its an old property. Any ideas would be appreciated.

One side has casements and the other side has very expensive vertical sashes.0

Go further afield and see what others have.0

I'm really interested in what you do with your windows, we recently got our sashes renovated. But we have a couple of windows that have replacement pre double glazing modern style windows that I hate and want to replace with double glazed sashes that are in keeping with the house.
The sashes that we had renovated we thought were beyond repair, amazingly they weren't and draft proofing & and locks were put into them and rotten lintels were replaced with hardwood, they look fab now and it was a fraction of the cost of getting new windows, it's really worth looking into salvaging them if you can find someone reputable. You an even get double glazed pieces that you can have put in the original windows single glazed areas, We might do this in the future.0 -

Many pvcu windows do not meet the standards required of new house builders, and it could be argued these are not good.
There are mse users with window knowledge. Wearing my home owner hat, I would say draw up a spec then see who meets it.
Start with BS/Kitemark for the profile, then ditto for the sealed units, then ditto for the fabricator. Get A rated windows, get a performance certificate and seek local recommendation on fitting.

Would you mind sharing ballpark renovation costs and location in the UK? Did you use a local company/one man band?
Recently moved into a late Victorian house with sash windows which will likely need some work in the coming years0 -
Have you considered getting wooden frame replacements with double glazing? This is what we did when we renovated an old house in South Devon not too far from the sea. They looked much better than upvc, and although they cost a bit more it was worth it imho.
upvc doesn't last forever, and salt is pretty corrosive to aluminium... wood needs maintenance (read: repainting every now and again) so there are pros and cons with either. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -

and not very local to the OP so not really spam in my view given the OP lives in Cornwall.
Oh right ,silly me for thinking Upvc window companies only supply locally........:rotfl:
Apparently they are the the "Uk's leading Upvc sash window company ".........;)0 -

Professional Builder is available monthly FOC at builders merchants. Get a copy, open up the first few pages and you will see a company that has been placing a full page ad for ages. In a trade mag means they should be above board, although I have no personal dealings with them.
Prices are clearly listed for estimating purposes. If anyone is looking at pvcu sash windows, and does not know of this mag...I guarantee you will not believe the prices.
In fact, get a copy and lets have some feedback on the forum. It would make a tremendous thread!0
