Tasty vegetarian gravy? Does it exist?

• no problem! Husband has been veggie for 20+ years so well used to cooking for veggies! Prefer to make my own gravy with veg water, stock, wine and spices but where Bisto original really comes in useful is for thickening veggie stews and even certain curries etc. It's basically potato starch, veg oil and flavour enhancer. For a richer gravy, add a spoonful of mustard, a spoonful of soy sauce and some black pepper.

The aunt Bessie's one is fantastic, one of very few brands to not contain MSG yet still really tasty, without being too salty either. Xx
• I know you dont want to cook gravy but if you get the urge this is simple and fantastic...even my meat eating family prefer it to meat gravy and makes loads. I use green oxo for the stock

Red onion gravy
1 red onion, diced
2 tbsp oil
2 tbsp plain flour
Clove of garlic (crushed)
450ml/15fl oz vegetable stock
1 tsp yeast extract
1 or 2 tbsp soya sauce
:
a. Fry the onion in the oil for 5 minutes
b. Add the flour and cook for a further 5 to 10 minutes until the flour and onion are nut-brown and the onion is soft and slightly pulpy
c. Add the garlic then gradually stir in the vegetable stock (or fresh vegetable cooking water)
d. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
e. Add the yeast extract, soya sauce and black pepper. Stir well
f. If it goes lumpy, use a balloon whisk to beat out lumps, or pour in blender
g. Strain if you like, or serve as it is
Notes. As a variation, try adding a diced red pepper, a handful of cashew nuts, about 8 diced button mushrooms and a dash of red wine. Rather than straining the gravy, whizz it in a blender

be careful with the bisto - Bisto Original Gravy powder and Bisto Onion Gravy Granules veggie - but NOT Bisto complete Gravy Mix. Co-op Gravy Mix is another good one

I don't know if its all stores but the bisto veggie gravy is reduced to 31p in the tesco express on corn street in bristol. Both veggie and vegan, and pretty good (:
• I inadvertently bought some Tesco ready made shallot and onion gravy thinking it was granules. It was lovely but at £1.49 a bit expensive as it only did us twice.

I add some redcurrant jelly into my onion gravy(But I must admit to using oxo beef stock cubes when I do this so not veggie), makes it well lush, lol!
