Home Contents Insurance

Anyone know what the average "sum insured" for a 2 Bedroom House is?

I currently have the contents value at £25'000 is this reasonable or should I think about increasing it?

Thanks

Eclipser it really does depend on what sort of things you own.

Basically if you split that 25K across all the rooms in your house (based on 2 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen & lounge) it means 5K per room.

Does this seem enough to re-carpet, re furniture the house. Then add in all the little bits so cutlery, crockery, electric items (even the kettle) and things like washing maching, cooker ect

Have a look on http://www.directline.com/home/calculator.htm it breacks all your rooms down and you can work out what you need from that.

It's a waste of your money insuring the "average" amount.

If you are below average you are wasting premium, and above average you won't get the correct value paid in any claim.

Either go for blanket coverage ("up to" £xx,000), or do an inventory and insure the exact replacement value.

"New for old" applies as well. It's the replacement cost, rather than the purchase cost to insure for.

Also don't forget to look at Top Cashback and similar sites. I'm in line to get £45 cash back for a new contents only policy. Also l saved £127 just by not renewing with my previous insurer.

Don't forget though, you can't rely on getting the cash back so l wouldn't choose a policy just because of the cash back.
