Could someone whose been recently please confirm the departure tax payable when leaving Mexico and the accepted methods of payment. Is it same for adults and children? Thanks.

Last time I was there, I paid in US$. However, I believe that US$ are no longer accepted, even for tips, because of their use by drug dealers.

I have been looking for a holiday in November around the caribbean. I have viewed a holiday in Mexico with Thomson and when you go through the hotel/flight selection stage you get the following message.
"Exit tax approx 800 Mexican pesos payable on departure."

    Hope that helps.

There was an interesting thread about this recently...

Apparently when you arrive they give you some kind of temporary residence card. While you are there, you can take this card to a local bank (HSBC I think), make a payment of just 294 pesos, get a receipt, and then your departure tax is paid. It is only if you leave it until you get back to the airport that the tax jumps to 800.

I'm pretty sure that is only for charter airlines. All the scheduled airlines include the tax in their fare.

Callum9999, thats what I need, off the Riviera Maya next week flying Thomas Cook. Very reluctant to put much store on what the travel agent tells us given the lack of knowledge they normally display. When I booked the girl told my wife it was not hurricane season. Had to point out I lived there for two years and could assure her it was! In fact I see this morning that there is one heading into Carribean this weekend called Issac, be interesting to see where it tracks although initial predictions seem to show it moving towards north over Dominican and Cuba.

I've had a look on the Lonely Planet website. The discussion is interesting, but not very clear. As I understand the position, the temporary residence card is what allows a foreigner to spend time in Mexico. It is not free, and you are supposed to take it to a bank pay for it during your stay. If you fail to do so then when you leave you have to pay the fee together with a fine, amounting to a total of 800 pesos.

As posted above, the fee for the card is included in scheduled air fares, but not the cost of charter flights.

Crikey that'a a big difference if its right. I must have missed that thread. I am researching taking the family to Mexico next year and was quite shocked at the departure tax which mounts up for a family of 5.

Remember that if you use a scheduled airline you don't need to think about this (all included as part of the air fare).
