    kittiwoz calm down.

Some males and quite a few females (HR, administrators, secretaries, workers in the profession themselves) are sexist particularly in male dominated professions, while others aren't. You just learn to deal with it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • it was more of a suggestion that as i was the one up dealing with it at 7am perhaps it's their turn, not mine. sorry if i offended you.

Why the hell should I just learn to deal with it? Why should I just grit my teeth and smile? Why should I have to put up with that or why should any other woman? I used to do it because I wasn't confident enough to stand up to them and I knew they'd give me a load of stick which I wasn't strong enough to deal with. But I've since learned that there are a lot of people, including a lot of men who aren't sexist so I can do without the ones who are and if they don't like me for standing up to them I can deal with that because I don't like them either and I don't need their approval.

When women make up more than 10% of engineering students, when the average pay for women is as much as for men, when women aren't overrepresented amongst menial labourers, when men spend as much time on housework as women do, then I'll calm down. For now I'm righteously !!!!ed off.

Our landlords really couldn't care less

Whether they care or not it is their problem. Tell them they have 7/14 days to repair the problem or you will be:

    a. Contacting CAB/Solicitor/Environmental Health etc

    and/or

    b. Obtaining 3 x quotes for the work, going with the cheapet quote and deducting the cost from your rent.

and as for kittiwoz, don't worry your pretty little head about it luv.

As for your engineering background you're the perfect person to make a cup of tea for us all and while you're in there any chance of a sarnie?

    ;)
  • thank you ivrytwr3, if the problem comes back that's what we'll (all of us) do, hopefully we seem to have solved the problem with bleach - a bit of googling leads us to believe it wasn't a blockage, but a problem with bacteria in standing water.

kittiwoz you sound like a very strong person, and i think you are right to stand up for what you believe in - once again i apologise.

Why apologise? Just because one woman wants to lead her life her way, why are you apologising for leading your life the way YOU want to?

Some women have/want to do things theirselves, other's don't know how or in some cases use their female charms to get us males to it for them. I don't begrudge either, but i bet you're a good-looking woman who has men bending over backwards to come and "fix your shelf" while kitty never got shagged last night because she wears Bridget Jones style pants who always over-reacts and is tearful, probably because she has a butch female lover who is struggling to remove the wood from her a$$

<irony>Oh yes, us weak and feeble-minded women can't possibly do DIY or degrees in mechanical engineering.<end irony>

If you're rubbish at something or you don't understand something don't make out it's inevitable because of your sex or your hair colour. I don't expect all women to be competent at everything but there are plenty of incompetent men too. It is not cute to simper and feign feminine helplessness. It is really annoying and serves to justify and reinforce chauvinist attitudes. I got called "the Barbie doll" by male coursemates who speculated in front of me about whether female students got shagged last night, if they were wearing any knickers, or if they took it up the 4rse, the technicians had page three posters stuck to the lab walls and I had to pretend not to be bothered by any off it because they'd just say I was a typical over-emotional woman over-reacting, or that I had a stick up my 4rse, must be frigid, probably a lesbian, whatever. You know what? It is not funny and it is not OK and neither is you encouraging it.

Are you on your period? :)

Wow...no need for that outburst. Did you get it ultimately sorted in the end? I too have a stinky bathroom with a similar problem but I'm stuck with the responsibility as I seem to have bought the house that Jack built (or Jill...don't want to get called sexist).

Oh yeah...apparently starflower oil is great for mood swings. Sense of humour transplants are also options in persistent cases...
