    What have you found yourself?

    I am happy to help but do not fancy writing stuff when you have already found something cheaper.

    How many people travelling? Adults? Children?
    Are you planning on returning? If so, when?

    Any exact dates in mind?

    Only one adult traveling.

    Yes, I plan to retun within four days. I checked it on transportdirect and it says £113 off peak retun. I've looked up on trainline for cheap tickets but it doesn't show Great Yarmouth on "Best Fare Finder" :(. Forget National Express coaches becouse it takes 12 hour from Preston to Great Yarmouth ! !

    I'd have to go on Megabus from Preston To London and then take it from there ??

    Any help ???
  • How about:

    • Preston -> Manchester Piccadilly
    • Manchester -> Norwich
    • Norwich -> Great Yarmouth
    The first leg you can get cheap advance tickets with Transpennine Express - there seem to be plenty of £6 fares but it depends on what day you travel

    The second is operated by East Midlands Trains - again, cheap advances available - several £18 fares that I've seen
    Finally Norwich - Great Yarmouth is £6.40 each way.

    Looks like it can be done that way for about £60 - £70 return if you're flexible. You'd probably be using those very trains anyway (it's the most direct route) but you save a lot by buying tickets specific to each operator separately.

    Billy,

    Thanks very much for the gen. I can't find the "Manchester to Norwich" on "Best Fare Finder"

    Do I just book in advance to get the cheaper price ???

    I am thinking of using megabus from preston to london. They claim to have tickts from £1, but I can't find it on their site.
  • Forget the 'best fare finder'....not all destinations are in there.

    I've just looked on the eastmidlandstrains.com site and the Manchester-Norwich fares seem to be £1 cheaper than anywhere else so I suggest you book all your tickets there.

    I suggest you search for the Manchester - Norwich first and fit the other trains around that.

    What dates and times do you want to travel?

    e.g. you said late September so picking the 27th as an example:

    Preston - Manchester, dep 07:47, arr 08:27, £6
    Manchester - Norwich, dep 08:43, arr 13:13, £24
    Norwich - Great Yarmouth, 13:36, arr 14:09, £6.40 - total £36.40

    I can't find the £18 fares now - also Fridays and Saturdays seem to cost more; if there aren't any cheap fares then don't bother, just buy the off-peak return and then you can use any train you want.

    WOW Billy,

    You must be a mindreader.

    27 sept. was the date I am setting off.

    Can't find the Manchester - Norwich £24 you're talking of :(

    Lowest advance fares on National Rail Enquiries are

    27/9 Outbound 17.56 via Euston and Liverpool St arr 23.31 £30.50
    1/10 Return 17.47 also via Liverpool St and Euston arr 23.39 £25.00
    Total £55.50

    Travel via Manchester is more expensive than this and takes longer

    Edit: First class is available on these trains for a total of £78.50
  • Just goes to show how complicated it is - I'd looked at via Euston and didn't see much - though I didn't look at trains arriving that late.

    The rail ticketing system is a mess, and only seems to get worse!
