.....gentlemen from Africa ask for your bank details so that they can make a bank transfer. It opens the door to all manner of fraud and dodgy dealings.........
A bit off topic (as in completely!!) but does anyone actually know what “dodgy dealings” can happen if someone else gets your bank details?0 -

They need more information about you that just your bank details such as a copy of your signature, address, date of birth, mother's maiden name, other id i.e. bank card, passport, cheque book , internet banking passwords.
This means in theory your close friends', family and employer can defraud you as they may know some/all of this information but a complete stranger with just your bank details can't. For example 2 of my friends' have found out though not getting cheques/credits in their bank accounts that there is at least one other person with their name in the area where they live.
You shouldn't give these personal details such as address, DOB out to anyone and when organisations that are not financial/government ask you for details like DOB or mother's maiden name just give them a made up DOB and a made up name especially if they want this information over email/a non-secure web form. These organisations just want an unique identifier for you, and as you can't forget your DOB or mother's maiden name they use that.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
I can honestly say that I have never been asked for my mothers maiden name
I still don’t see what dodgy deals can go on. Even if someone knew everything about me surely if the bank gives my money away to a fraudster it is their problem not mine0
