Warranty Cover MB&G

Hi All,

I need a bit of help. Basically I bought a car last month which came with a 3 month warranty through MB&G. The car has since developed a fault and the ABS pump has failed. The repair cost with parts (Renault only!) is £1350.

They have agreed to the repairs but are insisting that I pay this upfront and they will send me a cheque on confiration of the repairs and print outs from the diagnostic computer.

Obviously this is a hell of bill to pay up front and one which I cannot afford. Is this usual practise ? Do warranty companies expect you to pay up front. Also do I have any grounds to get the garage where I bought the car from to pay up front if this is the case.

Finally if a cannot afford to get the car repaired to I have any grounds to return the car and get my money back.

PS Wasn't sure if this should be in motoring or consumer rights sorry.

Its usual for warranty companies to wriggle out of a lot of claims.

They wont usually cover diagnostic work.

How old is the car? Price? And did you buy it from a dealer? If you did take it back to him to repair.

It's an 07 Renault Espace which I bought for £4800, I have contacted the dealer and he said the warranty company will take care of it.

The repair garage contacted them today and they gave a temporary authorisation to repair as there were 'details missing' from my policy.

When I contacted them to ask what details, they said the policy was not fully registered? I asked what this meant, and they gave the speil from my first post?

    Typical insurance company I suppose
  • The aftermarket warranty doesn't exonerate the selling dealer from complying with the law though, most dealers just point buyers to these warranties when things go wrong, as if they have no responsibility. You have a reasonable expectation for a car costing £4800 to last longer than 3 months without a calamitous repair bill and a fault which presents so quickly after purchase is deemed to have been there from the time of purchase.

We had a similar issue recently with an old Caravelle - alternator failed - there is an aftermarket warranty- warranty company played up - I contacted the selling garage and firmly pointed out their responsibilities relating to the fault and was assured it "would be sorted out" between them and the warranty people - was duly paid by cheque about a month later. I had already had the van repaired though, luckily the cost was nowhere near your repairs.
  • Think about every other insurance policy you have: do you pay for repairs first then get the money back later?

You crash your car. Do you pay for it to be repaired yourself then get the money back?

    The answer will be no..
