VERY persistant Indian call centre

Fellow MSE'ers, can I please call upon your expertise and advice with this problem I have?

For about the last 6months we have been getting calls from a company saying they are calling us on behalf of a UK based claims company. They are looking for a person that does not live here, and we know the previous two tennants, it is none of them either. They refuse to say the company they are calling on behalf of, and the number they use is withheld, so we cannot check the number to see who it is by doing 1471.

We have registered with TPS and I've spoken to BT about being ex-directory, and we are definately not listed anywhere.

The reason I am getting increasingly frustrated, is that THEY are getting ever more narky when talking to myself or my wife! This week they have been ringing daily, and always at inconvenient times - dinnertime, kids bed/bath time and even nearly 10pm before too! When we've mentioned that there's no-one here by that name, or to please remove us from their database, they insist there is and we've been hung up on the last few times!!

Is there any way that we can report them? Find out who they are? Please, someone help us out, they are really getting on our nerves - and we're not easily flustered!

The person they are looking for is a Mrs...and my Mrs cannot lie to save her life! Nice idea though :)

I tell them they've called the local nick & I'll just go & get my Sargent...
  • What about getting a sports whistle and blowing it very hard down the phone? They used to advise this years ago when people were having problems with perverts calling people.

I have had this in the past, next time they call, just say you are going to get her, put the phone down, 5 mins later go back and if they are still there tell them she is coming, 15 mins later check and see if they are there..... Keep going.

Love the whistle idea though, that would be tempting

This does kind of sound like they may be debt collectors chasing after someone to me. It might be worth getting in touch with your bank or whoever else you get in tough with to check for debts against your property.

I had this some years back when someone misused my address for credit and I had a number of companies chasing unknown names at mine. My bank were very helpful about sorting this out - Although I did have to repeat some pretty strongly worded letters to some of them a few times before they got the message.
  • Perhaps not the ideal answer, but don't answer withheld numbers?
If i am at home during the day i get loads of calls like this asking to speak with someone who had the previous number. Given up telling people he is not at this address, number, registered with the relevant body, told Virgin Media - still the same.

Unfortunately we don't have a phone with caller-id.

I shouldn't have to pay to set that up, just to avoid these cretins!

Tried this as well, but not only do they hang up mid conversation, they don't hang around if you are stringing them along...they must have a call per minute target!

Get a phone call screening gadget. Not cheap, but may be worth it for your peace of mind and sanity.

I've recently got Truecall and it's great for stopping all those annoying calls.
