Any driver insurance for my son's carers?

hi, my son lives in a supported living house (single occupancy) and has a core staff of 4 working a shift pattern topped up by various others if the need arises. He doesn't seem to be able to get a motability car as that is limited to 3 drivers and they need to live closer to him for that to work. So I am in the process of buying him an ex-motability 7 seater (he has to sit in the back as there have been incidents of him going for the driver from any other position.
Does anyone know the best way to insure this car. I will own it but rarely drive it, it will be kept at his address not mine and I want at least 4 different people to drive it.
Can't find anything obvious online to suit this situation, so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be delighted.

  • It might be worth ringing Mobility to ask about your son's situation. I know of some disabled adults who have mobility cars and their carers drive them. I don't know them well enough to ask about the insurnace situation though.

Alternatively, Fish Insurance has policies for disabled drivers. It might be worth asking them if they have policies for carers to drive. I think Endsleigh also have specialist policies.
  • You can get (1) multiple driver, [ more than one ] all drivers would have to be named and checked and usually over the age of 25 with 'x' years incident free history. and (2) any driver which limits the use to any drivers over a certain age and the usual claim and conviction free license to qualify.

If your vehicle is a WAV used as a WAV for your son start by getting 3 quotes from 3 different specialist places such as this one that will at least give you a ball park figure to begin considering your costs.

    - in addition to the norm is cover for mobility aids & adaptations covered ?
    - in the event of !! will the policy cover the price of a WAV replacement ?
    - in the event of !! will the policy cover a WAV loan vehicle ?
    - will multiple carers be included as named drivers still receive full comprehensive protection?

As kingfisherblue says ring Motability and ask about insurance pointers.

i know of several people who use motability leasehire/rsa's open policy which allows more than the usual number of drivers providing they are named on the policy & it is applied for in writing. also found someone posting about it here:

Thanks everyone, I spoke to Be Wiser as recommended by Riche from the Boro and the quote for an any 25+ year old driver was expensive but not unachievable. They are checking with their technical department to make sure that it's ok for it to be kept at my son's address rather than mine, but the sales person thought it wouldn't be much different as it isn't kept in a car pool lot or anything like that.
Problem nearly solved and it's going to be much cheaper than the other option of leasing a car from his care provider.
I also looked at the other forum and although I understand WHY motability changed the rules, it's just making life even more complicated for some of us!
