Problem with TV? Sky? Aerial?

Before I ring Sky and spend ££s on a repair which may not be needed I thought I'd pick the brains of lovely MSEr's ...

On some channels, such as Watch, Home, ITV1+1, the picture keeps stopping for a second then catches up, so it looks as though it's skipping constantly and it's beginning to drive me mad. On ITV+1 last night the picture was ok, but the audio gave everyone speaking a kind of robotic voice.

Does anyone know whether this is a problem with the Sky or the aerial? It can't be the telly can it as it doesn't happen with every channel ...?

Sky doesn't use an aerial it uses a dish. Do you have a dish or an aerial?
Have you tried switching the box off and on again, at the wall?

Is it a Sky Plus box? If so you can do a full system reset before calling Sky and paying £65.

Erm ... both? Yep, switched it all off and it's still the same. Will try again though just in case I didn't keep it off long enough.

    No, just bog standard Sky.

Could be the tuner is on it's way out, assuming you pay a subscription, call Sky and threaten to cancel because the box is broken, usually they will wave the repair free.

Will do that if my 'switch-on, switch-off' experiment doesn't work. Thanks :)

See if you can blag a Sky + box whilst you are at it. There was life before Sky + but it wasn't up to much!!

Although not relevant to the OP, any Sky+ users should be aware that a full system reset will permanently erase all recordings, series link settings etc and should only be used as a last resort if all else has failed.

Most Sky+ issues can be resolved without doing a FSR.

Switching off the box and removing the plug or switching off the power for a few minutes and then restoring power reboots the box and cures many ills without erasing recordings.

A Planner Rebuild should also be tried before a FSR.
  • Have you tried replacing the lead from the Sky box to the TV?
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

Nope, when it comes to TV I am clueless. What sort of lead will it be? I'd move the TV to look but it's heavy so don't wanna do that if I can help it.

The 'switch-off, switch-off' experiment didn't work. Also noticed the clock on the screen (the one you see when changing a channel) is sometimes anywhere between 4-8 minutes behind and then suddenly catches up.
