No they wont. You will more than likely get a work placement in the likes of poundland.
  • I would pay your way on Courses, unfortunately they look untrustworthy when it comes to us doing what WE want to do for a Career.
    hope you sort it.

I know someone who was looking for work for 4 years and ended up having to fund his HGV himself by selling his motorbike (for his class 2) then work as a class 2 driver to get his class 1... worth it in the end but took a long time to get there... good luck!

100% untrue, sorry. If you have been, or are at risk of being made redundant then you can access European Social Fund funding via your local (most have it) FE College. It is called ESF Skills Support for Redundancy and provides funding for a large range of training and courses. There is also funding called Skills Support for the Unemployed, again via local FE Colleges which provides funding for people on JSA or ESA (WRAG) to undertake training related to the work they want to do. 1st step, contact your local vocational college and ask if they have this funding. 2nd speak to your local Jobcentre Plus to find out if they are referring people onto these opportunities.

So to answer the OP's question your saying the "dole" will pay or subsidise for HGV training?
They may however send him to work in a poundland shop to gain training and experience.

look at some of their case studies
Broken ankle gives Lara her career break
With the help of Jobcentre Plus and South Essex College of Further and Higher Education, Lara, previously unemployed gained an NVQ level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care, and a job with The Salvation Army.

    A new career for Michael
After a quarter of a century in the pharmaceutical industry Michael found himself redundant and out of work for six months.. He successfully retrained in call centre work thanks to a local provider, Contact Centre Professional who provided sector specific skills and training to secure him with a role within a leading call centre employer, Sitel.

Working together for the people of Northumberland
Eleven unemployed people who had been out of work for more than six months gained employment thanks to Sainsbury’s, Jobcentre Plus and a training provider. All the individuals benefited from specific training and achieved qualifications specific to the retail sector thanks to the training provider.

Ok, pedants corner. No, the "dole" will not pay for it. The European Social Fund (ESF) pays for it, administered by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) via contracts in the main awarded to FE Colleges as well as a few other organisations with Direct Contracts with the SFA, including Local Authorities and large private organisations. HGV training could, potentially come under this depending on the local Jobcentre Plus LMI (Labour Market Intelligence) information about jobs in the area and ESF priorities sectors in that locality.

With regards to working in Poundland, that is the one example people come up with who have only seen the programmes and read the bad stories around these initiatives (which this is not one) rather than having done any work in the sector and either seen first hand or have had involvement in some schemes which have had very good, tangible work outcomes.

Do you know of anyone that has had driving lessons or HGV training?
