Camcorder repairs without the wallet whacking!!

Hi - i've got a sony handycam camcorder that's a few years old. until recently it worked perfectly fine but now there's some problem with the tape drive. i'm no expert, but i'm sure it's something simple, the mechanism works perfectly well without a tape, but has a problem once you insert a tape.
anyway, i went to a few repair shops along new oxford st and they all said the same thing: it will cost £70-£100 just to LOOK at the camcorder. it's outrageous!! they then say, oh, but if there's something wrong, the £100 will go TOWARDS the final repair bill. meaning that the total will be a MIN of £70, and a maximum of me selling my house and putting my kids into care.
sorry. can anyone help? is there anyway to get an electrician or someone to glance at it?

A mate dropped his and his home insurance company replaced it rather than repairing it0

id go with the ebay suggestion, if its minidv you can get these for around £170 and they come with warrenty so to spend that to get a old one repaird is in my books uneconomical. If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
Mortgage - £2,000

Hi, I saw your thread and I fixed my canon camera E18 error with the help of some expert at Tech Support Community website. You can probably find a solution for your camcorder as well. Don't spend any money on it just ask about it and one of the expert will answer. You should search first maybe your problem is already listed. The website name is Fixya.com and here is the link for sony handycam support0
