Debates about the value of car warranties crop up frequently here.

Have a look at the posts linked to here

The option you mention basically only covers you if the vehicle is immobilised, and doesn't cover a large number of other faults which might arise, and which might be covered by a better warranty.

  • I have cover through Warranty Direct, I am £300 a year, it also covers me for mot failures that are picked up, I have had it for 2 years and have made one claim when the ECU unit on my last car failed, the total garage bill came to £2800 though vauxhall belmont and WD covered it without question, so for me it has worked out well.

£2800 repair on a vauxhall belmont? Didnt they only cost that much to buy new? Stopped making them in 1991??

I didnt know they did that sort of cover on a 20+ year old car?

  • My experience with WD hasn't been altogether good - just be aware that if you cancel a fully paid for policy with them, (I part exed the car while it was covered by a WD warranty) you will get very little back even if you only used 2 or 3 months of a 12 month warranty as they charge very high "cancellation" and "admin" charges. I ended up getting about £50 back from a £400 "luxury" policy which was only in effect for 3 months.

Lots of threads on car forums as well - most people have a bit of a battle getting them to accept liability for genuine repairs which should be no quibble - they have paid up, though, after quite a bit of arguing.

General consensus is that the OEM warranties which can be extended, are a better option if this is possible, but of course it isn't available on many cars from independent garages.

We recently bought an ancient high mileage Caravelle in very good mechanical condition from an indepedent garage - it came with a 3 year engine / drive train / named component warranty from a company called VGS. The alternator failed within 500miles and initially they wriggled out of it, but when we contacted the selling garage, we got a cheque about 4 weeks later from the warranty company.

I think WD and the like present some protection for car owners, but be prepared to fight the claim eventually........they all seem to try to wriggle out of paying anything. Thats insurance for you!!

IIRC the amount that WD will contribute to each claim decreases as the car gets older.

My experience with WD has also been poor. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. :(

    Experience mixed.

They paid out for an air con compressor and and ECU sensor.
However nationwide autocentre (think they are no halfords) were absolutely useless.

WOuld pay the extra to take it to a main dealer (or take it to a local mechanic but you will need to pay upfront and then claim the money back.

Vauxhall Belmont is the name of the garage.. not the car ;)

I bought a BMW with a warranty from Warranty Direct. I serviced the car at a local BMW dealer. When it developed a fault I contacted Warranty Direct to make a claim -

    1) Initially they refused to accept the car had be properly serviced; BMW dealer is not one of there recommended garages.
    2) Then they refused to pay BMWs hourly rates
    3) Then they said they would only pay for second hand or reconditioned parts

I paid the difference, and there contribution covered the cost of the warranty, but I'd never buy another car warranty again.
