My son is a diabetic and has been for the last 22years he is in his middle twentys now, and has been working for the same company for the last 6years. when ever he has hospital appointments he has to have time off work due to the times given, and when he complains they say they dont have later times. He is due to go into hospital to have major eye surgery which means more time off work, my question is can he get help with getting money as a top up or a benefit, because he doesn't get paid while off unless he uses his holidays, but these dont last long. As he has at least two or three appointments a month, this can be for his eyes, to see the diabetes nurse, diabetes dietition, or to see the diabetic speciallist for the monitoring of his insulin pump.
Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

May be able to get DLA/PIP depending on his needs.
Why doesn't he get sick pay, if he has worked for the same company for 6 years they are breaking the law I think if he doesn't at least get Basic Sick pay?Opinions are like bottoms - We all have one, just some stink more than others

Can he try to arrange the appointments to happen on the one day perhaps? Are they all at a hospital or the GP - it can be done - you just need to ask the people he sees. That way, the holiday days would be used more efficiently. (Sadly no SSP would be paid I think unless the days linked together in some way and I think the linking day rules may have been stopped now for this year?) If wrong then somebody will correct the last bit.
As to the bit with eyes, he should be able to get SSP for the time he is off recovering from that, best to get a fit note done and dusted from Consultant when in the hospital, you can complete the form on his behalf - then keep a copy and return original to employer who will then pay the SSP out to him.
Might be a good time to then get the future appointments coordinated with the eye op fit note.0 -
