    So has one of the lighting circuits fused then?
    There are two or possibly 3, have you identified which one it is?
    It'll be one of the circuits with the fuseholder with white dots on it.

    Squirrel or other vermin in the loft ????
    When they bite throught the wires the lights flicker......the thud is them dropping dead.

    OK, the serious answer is, if there are strange sounds coming from the fuse box, get someone qualified in pronto before the house burns down.

    Yes to be serious, looking at the age of the electrics get a professional in.......

    Fuses don't make sounds when they blow. Nor do they inexplicably blow for no reason. Arcing however does cause loud noises and heat, which might encourage fuses to blow, so that seems like a possibility.

    Personally, I'd call a professional as soon as possible.
