Overdraft and charges - Advice please!

Hello,
Apologies in advance for the long post, I'll try to summarise!
About 6 years ago I had a problem with my Natwest account. I had an overdraft of £500 and I accidentally went over it by £40 with a direct debit. At the time I wasn't working, and started to fail on all the overdraft payments. By the time it got to £750, Natwest had contacted me to say they were freezing my account due to the charges. However Natwest then continued to charge me after this. I've done some research, and I think what they've done isn't right. I still have letters stating that my account would be frozen, and then further letters to show the charges.
The debt was over £1000 last time I received a letter. I had a solicitors letter through the post too. About 2 years ago I wrote to Natwest and to the solicitors to inform them they had informed me the account was frozen and then continued to add charges. I haven't heard from either of them since, but the debt is still sitting on my credit rating.
I know I need to contact them, but I wasn't sure where to start or what to say! It probably sounds quite daft, but just wanted to ask the advice of those who have done this sort of thing before. I want to sort out the debt I owe them (well, before they claimed it was frozen and then continued charging me!).
Thanks in advance for any help!

You say ''about'' 6 years ago - when exactly??
This is very important.
If it has been over 6 years since you acknowledged the debt in any way it becomes statute barred ie they cannot take you to court to enforce the debt.
Check your records carefully and come back with further information.0
