Using oak veneer

I'm having a staircase built, the sides and rails being oak, the treads being mdf to save cost. The stair side of the treads will be carpeted, but the underneath will be exposed mdf. The two options I can see are to plasterboard over the underside, or to cover the mdf treads with an oak veneer.
Does anyone have experience of using oak veneer to do the underside of the stairs. The stairs are coming untreated so I could treat the stairs and the veneer in the same stuff (assuming I can get untreated veneer).
Many thanks.

The underside is likely to have blocks glued to the risers and treads to strengthen the stairs. If that is so , these will be a pain to veneer , will not have a pleasing appearance and it is very likely that there will be glue deposits to remove from each block.
I would suggest that you need to see the finished staircase before you start ordering any veneer.Forgotten but not gone.0 -
You could buy some sheets of Oak Veneered MDF and line the underside with that.0
