Dripping overflow pipe

Hiya,

There's a small white pipe that sticks out of the side of our house, just below the roofline. As far as I can tell, this comes from an overflow outlet from the cold water storage tank in the loft. Often, but not always, this pipe dribbles a small trickle of water.

I had a look in the water tank and the water level is right at the top, but this meant that the ball valve was in it's off position and not pouring any more water in.

Any idea why it's overflowing? Does the ball valve need adjusting/replacing?

Cheers

Pete

  • If it's the heating header tank, then the level of the water will fluctuate with the temperature of the heating/hot water system which may cause overflowing.

Adjust the ball valve so the water level is a couple of inches below the overflow.

    What OM ^^ said.

Yes bend the ball arm down so that it doesn't fill right to the top. This implies that the washer is on the way out tbh so bending the arm is probably only a temporary fix. Also make sure the float hasn't got water in it which can lead to the same result.

  • If it's a modern plastic ball arm, it won't be bendable, and the valve will have to be advisted with the little screw.

if it's as you say then it's the wrong ballvalve these are designed for wc's not roof tanks

It's an old metal ball arm, so I've given it a bend and will let you know if it makes a difference!

    Thanks fro the help
