But why did they not use the reset key, even if they thought it would be a quarterly bill?
Surely they did not want to pay for the amount already on the meter?

Citizens advice straight away. Don't waste any time trying to unravel this yourself. It's too important.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

they sent us a resett key to reset meter but never got round to it,,

we never in house, to be honest i thought it was qualterly bill, as never used key meter.

my son put 40 quid on key but he put it on the old key, which didnt work, but he didnt no as he a learning diffculites..

this week it set on fire blow up and totally destroyed the meter and no electricity. called them and engineer come out and said its been tampered, but i took a pic to show people on facebook show them what happened and you can clearly see all the tsgd sre secure and rusted, he cut all them of and he said the screws were loose, holding main out to the house, tampering and not putting electric on untill investigation, i have a dissabled 18 year who needs caring for, but they dont care, they accused my husband for it but he doesnt touch anything, the previous tennant owed 3000 on electric and 400 on gas, and leeged it without paying rent he is wanted by the police as the baliif said when they come for his stuff and he got accused of conspire to commit fraud by missdeception they said thats got nothing to do with it,, we have no need to tamper with electrics, can you please help

    is it 2k or 3k?

When your son put £40 on the wrong key didnt you try and get your money back?

They need to go to CAB to get advice, as they do not appear to understand requirements/ what to do etc.

From what I can between the statements regarding the key and thinking its quarterly billed plus jot following up...I would say that the tamper was in place, whether previous or current tenant, and delivering power.

For some people, although wrong, may shift it onto the lower end of their priorities list.

They will have known that they were getting the electricity for nothing and that makes them as guilty as the person that put the bypass in.

I agree they have done wrong and should pay for their usage.

I don't agree that the original criminal act has an equal severity to sitting back and going along with the crime. There could be all sorts of mitigating factors that may need considered and its not possible to say until more is posted.

In my job I don't believe anything, without it been in black and white from an external source. CAB are as much use also as the meter. The disconnection is against the property and not occupier
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    Totally agree about proof.

In terms of the disconnection though, if it had been the result of a crime committed by the previous occupant, I don't believe the "property" rule should be applied to an innocent new occupier or would hold any weight should it go to the ombudsman. Its an antiquated rule like the "we charge for PPM's even though it wasn't your debt" cop out policy.

If the previous tenant had bypassed the meter how could they have run up a £2000 or £3000 bill?

It doesn't fully add up but if the tamper had been resolved, perhaps this way the bill they created?
