Help, please re erroneous credit card payment!!!

Hi

Can anyone help as I am banging my head against a brick wall with this one.

I recently attempted to pay £100 to my Abbey Visa by internet banking however due to a slip of the mouse selected the wrong payee by accident and didn't notice. This account is a defunct Debenhams store card which I have not used for years. I contacted Debenhams and GE Money who back their store cards but they have been no use at all. It would seem that my account number has now been issued to someone else (they say they do this with old account numbers) and because my personal details are not those now on file for that number they cannot discuss any details with me - they canot even tell me if that account has been credited with my £100.

They have also told me that my bank should be able to retrieve this money but the bank are not interested and say that this is between me and GE Money. I was also told by someone that the bank should have a transaction number for this payment and that this would enable the payment to be recalled however the bank also state that this is not the case.

Can anyone help, please!

Your bank can definitely recall the money if it's an error.

I can quite understand why GE Money won't talk to you about it - if they've reused your account number then quite rightly your details don't tie up with their records. It's a bit poor that they do reuse account numbers - they should have enough not to run out - so they have rather created this problem.

I think you should also remove your obsolete payment arrangements from your internet banking!
  • Cheers for that. The Debenhams card details are long gone from my payee list!

I recently made a payment to my landlord, using my Barclays online facility, for the first time. But, as my landlord was not set up as a regular payee, the £300 went to Barclaycard instead! I owe them a lot and although I shall be making them a payment this month will there be any likliehood of me being able to requst this money back? Afterall, the payment was in error.

Does anyone know how to go about getting this refunded? I can't afford to let go of £300 this month!

I accidently sent my credit card my rent payment one month, which I couldn't afford to let them keep. It took a bit of persuation (begging) on the phone but they eventually agreed to send it back. I imagine provided that you're going to pay the minimum payment this month, you should have a fair chance of getting the rest returned.
