CH header tank overflowing when system is cold

Hey guess what - I fiddled with the ballcock thingy (ooerr missus) in the cold water storage tank yesterday during my investigations... and it seems to have stopped leaking! It is very creaky so I presume it will start again in the near future, but at least that does confirm it is the ballvalve area that is causing the problem.
