WIFI Router Booster !!

I've just moved my printer to another room in the house but it now fails to pick up the signal from the router. Is there such a thing as a router booster that I can use/plug in nearer to the printer that will pick up the signal from the router and give it a boost so the printer can pick up the signal. I'm using a Speedtouch router - thanks in advance

Basically you could try the boosters that you get, but you're best option would probably be powerline type home plugs, unless you just want to get a wireless adaptor and run it through up to the printer area (aka long cable, which defeats the purpose of wireless pretty much!)
If you look up powerline home plugs, you can plug one downstairs connected to the router, and send one upstairs for the printer (if it has a network socket). If it doesn't you would then need either a powerline that does wireless, or a wirelss adaptor.

Search Homeplugs and powerline with wifi etc to find products. That assumes your house is all one one line (power) and not split over a couple of rings.

You can also use another wireless router (depending on the model) to act as a repeater - if you know anyone who has an old one lying around. But they can be tricky to set up and not for the novice.

    I'd go with the homeplugs.
  • I'm currently using an AOL supplied Speedtouch router - I also have tucked away another two identical routers supplied by AOL which have never yet seen the light of day - are you saying I can use two routers ?

I don't know about those particular routers - but generally it is possible.....you need to configure the second router as a repeater/relay.

If you google something like "using second router as a wireless repeater" you will find plenty of advice. But it depends on your level of network knowledge ... not for the beginner.

It usually involves an ethernet cable between the two, turn off DHCP on the repeater, make sure the SSID is the same on both, and treat the second one as if it was like cable using bridging mode , but with those I don't know for sure, as Tony says google is your friend

I use a TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N Range Extender model TL-WA830RE, about £30 from Amazon. Very easy to set up and just sits in the Hallway flashing away and doing its job.

Have you tried to reposition the router that you already have to see if it can get a better signal?
  • yes - I did reposition inasmuch I moved the router from the bedroom to the lounge (where most internet activity is used) leaving the printer in the bedroom, but whilst the laptops all work ok - the printer does not receive a signal, and I don't want to have the printer in the lounge

Another vote for TP link from Amazon

Just plug it in to a electric socket

Be aware that those posted on amazon does not have a wireless section to them, at which point, if your printer has a network socket, not a problem, otherwise you will need to either work out how to repeat your current spare routers, purchase a wirelsss adaptor etc.
If you go for home plugs, and have no network socket on the printer, do yourself a favour and find one with inbuilt wireless to negate all extra wires/routers changes/onboard costs.
