What will they do if I cancel the direct debit?

Hi,
So the situation is this...
Back in February my boyfriend took out a gym membership with a 12 month contract, he signed all of the paperwork for it and everything but we set up the direct debit in my name from my account as all of our bills go from my account so it was just easier to keep track of it that way. We have since moved about 15 miles away from this gym so he doesnt go anymore. If I cancel the direct debit for this membership can they do anything about it? I haven't got the contract with them so surely they cant chace me for the money and they don't have a current address for my boyfriend so would they try and find him for it or count it as a loss?

They would pass the debt onto a debt recovery firm (in fact some recovery firms pay the company money to then own the debt) and they will get your details one way or another and it also counts as a bad mark on your credit history.
Talk to the gym first, work something out.0 -

He signed the contract, it doesn't matter who pays, its his name down to pay it.
You moved, not the gym, this means its down to you to settle the account for the agreed period.
You will be chased, you will pay more, much much more by avoiding to pay it.0 -
They will try to chase using the last contact details, then pass it to. A debt collectors.
Eventually could lead to a ccj for your partner if he continues to evade the debt ... ( not saying it would get to that)
Get your boyfriend to talk to the gym and work something out0 -
If they have your card details they will just claim the money using them. Check the contract, it usually says this is what will happen if you cancel the direct debit. You can't run away from it, your BF needs to sort it out with the gym.0

I got a new contract phone out from Orange, but I moved into a cave with no signal. Can I cancel the direct debit and not pay, will they chase me?
You signed a contract, you need to pay it. Besides, 15 miles is hardly the other side of the world! It's not their fault you moved, and they will find where you (him?) live and chase you for the money.0 -
If you provide proof of your new address they may let you off some of it. Check the t and csI have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off
