Dublin - New Year?

Hi Everyone :)

I'd like to go away for a short break over the New Year period. Does anyone have any experience of Dublin over New Year? I'm not really a massive drinker/party animal, so I'm not sure if it is for me? I have heard that the city is lovely though.

Aside from the celebrations on the 31st itself, I'd also like a couple of days either side to explore the city and surroundings - are touristy spots likely to be up and running considering it is the holiday season?

Many thanks for any help :)

Dublin isn't the party city some would have you believe, the high-jinks are restricted to just one quite small area, Temple Bar.

Never been at New Year, but last time we went to Dublin we stayed in the Ashling Hotel, which was brilliant. It's a bit out of the town centre, but the dirt-cheap tram to the centre stops right outside, and it's just a couple of hundred metres from Heuston Station, where there are direct buses to/from the airport.

However, when we checked in we did sweet-talk them into an upgrade to one of their best rooms at the front, no idea what the standard rooms are like.

  • Thanks Bazster, I will check out that hotel. Sounds like it could be a good option.

Been to Dublin for NY - my advice is don't bother unlike you like lock-ins / ticketed entry. Try somewhere decent like Amsterdam or Barcelona
