I know this may sound a silly question but please bear with me. If I switch my TV/cooker/video recorder off but leave them plugged in and the switch at the wall on, are they using electricity?

Basically no. Unless they are on "standby" rather than completely off. Our DVD recorder can only be switched "off" by switching off on the wall. Otherwise is is on standby. Your cooker may have a clock for example which would be using some electricity, though precious little.0
