Apple Time Capsule for Mac

While the time capsule is good, there are better and cheaper NAS boxes available. esp as its a device that sits out of sight for all of its life and the main component (ie the drive) are similar across all devices.
Eg a 3tb TC is £400, a 3tb nas is around £150-£180, ok you loose the access point but most people will have one already, plus mosts NASs support DLNA if you want to stream your movies to a TV or similar devices.
Plus id be slight paranoid without a raid setup as my backup drive0 -
Don't forget, if you buy AppleCare for your Mac, then the coverage automatically extends your Time Capsule warranty to 3 years. Mine is 500GB and 4 years old, and has saved my bacon a number of times!0

I just backed up my new MBP for the first time on a seagate goflex 250gb usb hard drive - It took almost 5 hours to do 14GB. Started at 9pm and finished at 1.51am. Luckily subsequent, hourly backups, took seconds only....but then again not much data to backup in the subsequent backups of course.

Don't confuse Time Machine and Time Capsule. Time Machine is software included with OSX that will back up to ANY hard drive plugged in or networked to your Mac. I can say from experience when my wife's MacBook Pro hard drive failed that as long as you actually keep the backups up to date (!) it's very easy to pick up from exactly where you left off when you restore.0

Our Son has had Time Capsule for over 4 yrs with no problem, and ours is 2 yrs old also without problems. The Applecare taken when we bought our imac also covers the time capsule and other accessories for 3 yrs. Check out the Applecare policies, for full details0

Ooh thanks for pointing out that AppleCare will also cover the TC, hadn't thought of that. I was planning to buy AppleCare in month 11.
Just need to make a decision now on where to get the TC or an external hard drive.. Thank you all your replies!
Is it correct that you don't need to add an antivirus to an iMac like you would on a regular PC? The store said that the built in one is sufficient. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I use Sophos as it does the job and it's free.
I installed it not so much to protect me but because I get emails with attachments and files from Windows users that I often forward to other people. If those emails attachments or files contain a virus Sophos will detect it and stop me from passing it on.One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

Well this is being done on my 4 year old Macbook bought from the refurb store, was impossible to see it wasn't brand new! Still working just like the first day. Plus bought Applecare on ebay for less than half price BUT make sure you buy a physical package, not just a code from China or somewhere which may not be protected by ebay rules.0
