Burning Lignite - what's it like?

Hi - has nyone any experience in burning lignite - I was going to get some but don't what it's like, or if it's smokeless.

Can anyone advise as to heat output, ash or clinkers, is it easy to ignite etc?

Ecologically it's about the worst stuff you can burn. Power stations running on it make coal fired plants look squeaky clean as far as emissions go - and there are big concerns about damage from the huge opencast mining operations as well. Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole personally.

Brown coal ! quite soft and moist unless compressed and dried out, one of my customers had it for a cottage in Scotland that he rented out, he didnt rate it much.

Kind of a cross between coal and peat, not very good heat output and very sooty / tarry stuff due to the high moisture content.

The ash has the consistency of talc and there is a lot of it!

Just hope everyone has the same mind set

I live on the edge of a lignite rich area which if mined will wipe out an area of outstanding natural beauty. And possibly some of the scottish islands that hug this coast line.
