My 13 year old loves silly gifts - this year there will be a pair of wind up racing snails in his stocking (£2 from Wilkos)0

I agree with the novelty gifts idea.
My eldest loves reading so he always gets books and we usually get a game of some sort to play together, last year it was Creationary, the year before was a card based game called Dixit.
They usually get toiletries and undies and I try to get something silly to make them laugh when they open it.
Sweets and chocolate always go down well, we have an obligatory chocolate orange.
I gave my youngest a front door key one year which his brother wrapped up in several layers and boxes, it took him ages to unwrap.
Another thing we do is take turns opening presents instead of all diving in at once like when they were little.14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140 -
I second the nerf guns-my 22 year old and 49 yr old hubby love nerf guns- our DD (16) and me arent too enthusiastic though cus we are often the tagrets!! lol!
Nerf guns a must! I bought 4 last year when they were reduced to £2.50. Great fun! A board game like Pass the Bomb or Pictionary or good old charades! My sons are 18 & 21, like you we always have Christmas without extended family because of shifts.
I would't go over board with the silly toys for stocking fillers, the interest lasts a few hours then they are in the back of the cupboard.0
