Sanding uneven Victorian Floorboards help

Hi,

I'm in the process of sanding the floors in our new (and first) flat. I've prepped the floors, punched in all (I hope) of the nails. I've nearly finished the lounge, and am about to start on the bedroom.

I know that the recommended plan of action is to do 1 or 2 passes at 45 degree angle with coarse grit paper, but I've destroyed three sheets so far (drum sander). The sheets come off whole when this happens, as opposed to totally disintegrating when I hit a nail.

So I've just been sanding with the grain, but there are still grey bits of the old surface showing.

Is my only option to do these with the edging sander?
