Options
Hi
We are looking to buy a car for our 17 year old daughter who is learning to drive does anyone have any advice on good insurance companies and types of cars. Has anyone had any experience of purchasing insurance and if so what is the best way to get the best deal.
Many thanks

Do EVERY comparison website, EVERY company in the yellow pages. EVERY company in the local phone book.
Then get a few car mags, You know the ones that look like they should be on the top shelf
Phone EVERY company in those.
When you think youve phoned them all find some you missed,
Then you will know if youe getting a good deal. Dint pay invisible brokers over the net who get you cheap insurance by giving false details. It wont end well.
There is no best company or best car.
Postcode plays a big part in the quote.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
The usual cheaper to insure cars tend to be the Polo / Ka / 107 / C1 etc etc.
Best bet is to get a few registrations for the 1L (or other small engine) versions of the above cars, tap them into a comparison site and see which comes out cheapest.
Don't spend too much on the first car, statistically it'll probably be damaged in the first couple of years anyway.0 -

many many classic car companies will not insure a 17 year old.
OP there is no "BEST" cheap car to insure unfortunately.
there are several ways, to try and reduce a quote, based on many factors.
1. CAR. you must wipe your mind of anyone saying a group 1-4 insurance will be the cheapest to insure, for many these car groups can be the dearest to insure, because they are mainly insured by young newly passed drivers, have a high risk attached to them for being invovled in accidents (due to the statistics of young drivers crashing them, being stolen, or thefts from them, so for e.g a corsa 1.2 maybe more expensive to insure than say a 1.6 ford focus estate, or a crysler 2.0I PT cruiser (for e.g purpose not saying go buy one), so always think out of the box, i can run many cars off my mind that youngsters would struggle to insure, punto, corsa, KA, saxo, 106, 206, 207, c1, fiesta, clio, 1.4 ford focus, swift, micra, chevvy matiz, yaris.
2.location postcode is a lottery if you live in an inner city limit, expect to pay a high premium, check your area's postcode http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car-insurance-explained/car-insurance-postcode-risk-list.html anything with a * after means the insurers would like to see added security or garaged vehicles (motorbike mainly but applies to cars aswell with some insurers)
3.unemployed, you will pay more on insurance, student, a little cheaper but not allot as travel to and from college means commuting would be needed on the policy, and travel is mainly i peak times of traffic and land you with high risk being a young inexperienced driver.
4. the cars security, thatchem rated alarms give discount to insurance, if thatchem factory fit alarm best to ring for a quote to explain this as you dont get this option on the web, would it benefit in having one fitted by a local fitter? run the quote with and without thatchem rated 1 alarm or thatchem rated 2 immobiliser if the discount doesnt come down past the cost of fitting and purchase of one then ask yourself would it benefit you to have it fitted.
5.experienced named driver! it can reduce a premium drastically, again choose the occupation of this named driver carefully, infrequent user.
6. as a last resort, look into having a young driver tracker policy choose carefully as some charge for going over certain restriction and peak drive times.0 -
@Atrix
I think you may just have missed my point by several megaparsecs or, on the other hand, there's a remote possibility that, cleverly, you didn't.

OP, you also need to ask the insurers if they will continue to offer cover, and what the premium will be when your daughter passes her test (if you're buying before she passes).0

900-1000cc Toyota Yaris's are group 2 i think.
You should aim there, pretty cheap and slow, perfect for a 17 year old, but dont expect to pay less than £1500 for a years insurance."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0
