Mobile Phone use in USA on 3 mobile

Hi
Both myself and my girlfriend are travelling to USA for a month.
Am I correct in thinking we should turn off our data roaming unless we are in the hotel (which has free wireless)?
I dont want to come home with a massive bill! Also, I have read it is £3 per mb for browsing if you do use it. There maybe occasions where we need info quickly - how much is a mb of general browsing the net?

Where exactly will you be travelling?
I ask because I was in NYC/DC in February and whenever we needed wireless we a) used the hotel's b) used Starbucks' and c) used McDonalds'. I'm wondering if you need a plan B because you won't be near a Starbucks or Maccy Ds during your stay (unlikely
