Is this a con? how do I know?

Hi,

Ive recieved the following email today. Is it a con? My gut feeling is that it probably is, but looking through the email its got the correct bank, the address is security @ bank.co.uk. All the small print at the bottom of the email has the correct information (ie various registered offices of the owners of this bank) so I'm not sure.

You hear of scam emails all the time coming to get bank details off people so I am very reluctant to open it. Do banks email people?

We recently have determined that different computers have logged onto your Online Banking account and multiple password failures were present before logons. We now need to re-confirm your account information with us. If this is not completed by August 19, 2012 we will be forced to suspend your account indefinitely, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes. Please click here immediately to verify your identity and automatically reverse the change. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Please do not contact us directly as this issue is mainly processed by our Online Banking System. Regards,

So is it a con? How do you know?

Thanks

A con for sure, they do look quite convincing but the banks would never send you an email asking for your login details. The link they ask you to click on will direct you to a scam site where they will be able to grab your login details and try to empty your account.

If you hover your mouse over the link in the email (don't click on it) it will show you the fake website it will direct you to.

A scam for sure. Creating a sense of urgency to confirm all your security details in a email is something no bank would do. If anything they'd call you.

If they do that I'd still have fraud on the radar and call them back on a number known to belong to the bank.
  • Ive deleted it now, but next time I will.

I thought it was a con just wanted to make sure as I assumed if it was a con it would be from bank@yahoo.com or whatever IYSWIM.

    Thanks for your help

No, most fraudsters and con-artists are much smarter than that. You can setup a fake @bank.co.uk within a few seconds as you don't expect anyone to reply to it. The one thing they can't fake is the header information, but not many people understand how to parse that to determine the sender.

I ignore any emails stating they are from bank X. If the bank want to send me some important information, they'll post it. They have my address. Although I still treat those with a pinch of salt.

    An obvious phishing attempt.

However, think twice before reporting it. The last time I did, the bank promptly suspended my account. That's the last favour I do them.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • Your bank will NEVER e-mail you to tell you that your security has been compromised.
  • Another good tip is, if it's genuine it's usually address to your full name ie. Dear John Smith, the dodgy emails almost always say Dear Customer or something similar.
