computer locked by metrapolitan police scam

Hi , Just wanted to post to see if any one has/had ever been caught out by the ukash metrapolitan police scam?
Tonight my Daughter was on her laptop when suddenly her whole screen was taken up by a page which had "Metrapolitan Police" in the right hand corner.
The message covering the page stated that the computer had been locked by the police and went on to list the possible reasons for this.
The reasons given were basically that the laptop had been used to access inappropriate content.....child porno-graphy was one of the listed reasons :eek::eek::eek::eek:.
Immediately I panicked (even though I know beyond doubt that no-one ever has or ever WOULD access anything inappropriate in my home).
The message on the screen asked us to pay £100 via UKASH to have the pc unlocked. It was at this stage that I sensed that this was a scam! I mean , if the police had truely found that you were accessing such material they are hardly going to let you off with a fine of £100.
I googled and found that this scam is doing the rounds.
Has anyone any experience of it? We have booted the laptop up in safe mode and set the pc back a few days and we can now get on. We have run scans and nothing is getting picked up but I am still very worried.
Is there anything else I should be doing?

Will this get rid of it? We have done a system restore so hopefully that will be enough to get rid of it.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. The loopy one has gone :j0 -

Have you done a system restore or a windows restore?0

A system restore will do nothing of the sort (and probably wouldn't solve your problem either). A Windows restore would take your computer back to the day you bought it.banger9365 wrote: »it will get rid off every thing, and put it back to how it came out the box ,

banger 9365 wasn't saying a system restore would delete everything, they were just telling the OP what a full recovery would do.
I have never heard of a 'Windows restore'. Reset to factory settings (ie. a complete reinstallation) then yes, we have all heard of that.0 -
Had the same problem a few months ago.
The pc forum guys helped me out. Just state your problem and they will run you through how to get rid of the UKASH Virus.

I could be wrong but I was always under the impression that a windows restore takes the os back to a previously created restore point leaving any viruses etc); and a system restore formats (thus wiping out any nasties) and restores to factory settings.0
