Hi i took out a loan for 4000? i think in 1997 with Mercantile Credit.
I was sold the loan with the PPI needed.
I have no documentation or account number but wondered if there is any chance of finding out.
I have seen on here that they have been taken over by barclays.
How would i go about trying to sort it as i have no idea.
Could anyone please help.
Thanks in advance.

hi
I Have been in the same position as you and have been turned down by Barclays advising me that they cannot find me. I noticed on another thread that if you write to Barclays Insurance in Dublin they will forward you a copy of your PPI policy with your start date on it. I have since received this back and Forwarded on to Barclays PPI Claims in London who have acknowledge receiving it and state they are looking in to the matter.
approximately 5 weeks have passed and nothing back yet.0 -
Mercantile credit were already part of Barclays in the 90's, they rebranded as Barclays Mercantile some time in the 90’s but may have still used the Mercantile Credit brand for some products. The head office is Churchill Plaza, Basingstoke. They are or were quite separate from the regular retail part of Barclays Bank.0

As I recall, it was a totally separate legal entity - and not part of an Ombudsman scheme either.0 -
I am aware that Mercantile Credit is possibly Barclays Marine Finance at Basingstoke. Took advice from another member and asked
Barclays Insurance Dublin Limited
Policy Administration Department,
PO BOx12146
Dublin 2
Ireland
for a copy of my PPI Insurance document and they sent me it,
I have forwarded this to Barclays at Victoria Square in London and they have received it and are looking into it, I got this letter back from Barclays in Leicester.
6 weeks have passed with nothing back so I Plan to wait another 2 weeks and put a fresh claim into Barclays Marine Finance.
Evidence of your PPI must give you a chance.
Hope the above gives anyone who has no account details some hope.0 -
I took a small loan out in 1989 with Mercantile Credit. I have no other information. I contacted Barclays in Dublin and they wrote back within a week to advise that they only took over from 1998 and prior that date it was underwritten by another insurer, Consolidated Financial Insurance. I rang Barclays and the woman said she could help me no more other than going on to google and searching myself as they had nothing to do with this until 1998. I am now totally stuck where to go as cannot find an address to now write to?0

Even if you manage to complain to this insurer, your complaint is pre-regulation in 2005 and the company won't have to consider your complaint.
This thread is old and no one posting then has come back to report any successful alternative.0 -
Hi Today amazingly I have had a cheque from Barclays for a loan I had with Mercantile credit in 1997, saying that they have upheld my complaint and they agreed that I was mis sold ppi. I am still shocked as I have complained several times to no avail. I had no account number and only vague information, so all I can say is dont give up0

Hi, Thank you for your post which is most interesting. I too had a Mercantile loan, probably in the late 1980's, paid off mid 1990's. It is such a long time ago I cannot find any of my old records; but I am pretty sure it would have had PPI.
As yours is a very recent post and amazingly you got a payout from, Barclays, I would be pleased if you could advise me what address you wrote to or any other contact details that you may have.
Thanks if you can help.0 -
I would suggest having a look on the Barclays website for contact details, as anniecal logged off the very second she posted, never to be seen at MSE Towers again.0

Go the Barclays website and do a PPI check request. Chances are that there won't be any paperwork however so the complaint will not proceed if you do not have any yourself.

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
