What should a man wear to an evening wedding reception.

Hi,

I have been invited to an evening wedding reception, there is no indication of the type of attire required for the event. Should I wear a suit etc or do you think smart jeans and shirt would be acceptable

Any ideas?

I don't think you need to wear a suit just to the evening do, smart casual is fine.

I'm pleased with that answer :-)
  • I think it depends on where the evening reception is . If it's in a "posh" place , eg , a castle or lovely hotel , maybe even designer jeans would look a bit under dressed. What about dress trousers , shirt , no tie ? At the weddings I've been to , that's what most of the men wore . The ones in jeans just looked as if they hadn't bothered much . If someone has invited me to part of their special day , I'd want to make a bit of an effort . Just my opinion , of course ! Enjoy it whatever you decide .

I wouldn't wear jeans - you'll be amongst all the 'day' guests too, who'll be in much smarter clothes. Do as Scrapaholic suggested, suit trousers & a shirt.
  • Definitely no to jeans! Trousers and shirt yes but jeans are far too casual for a wedding.
  • Thanks for all the responses. I have a much clearer idea now :-)

Obviously there's a bit of leeway depending on how 'casual' the couple are and what their venue is like but I would say most male guests at the evening dos seem to wear suit/smart pants with a shirt. Wouldn't say a tie and suit jacket were necessary but jeans (especially light ones) might be a little too casual.

Depends on the venue and formality of the wedding in general - suit and tie for a smart hotel, trousers and proper shirt for a church hall. The invite style often gives a clue as to how formal the event is, but err on the side of too smart because you can always take a tie and jacket off if you feel overdressed. Never ever wear jeans or casual shirts to a wedding unless it is in the saloon bar of your local pub.

My wedding reception is in a 4* hotel and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if someone turned up in jeans! I would rather my guests be comfortable and confident in what they're wearing.
