What is home Emergency Assistance & Legal protection?

Hi,
As the title suggests I am shopping around for new buildings & contents insurance, and some include Home Emergency Assistance and some also include Legal Protection. What are they? Are they worth having?
My current premium was £602.88 as it was compulsary going with Aviva as part of my fixed rate mortgage that is ending so I can now shop around, quotes coming in at approx £180!! not to mention the cash back too!! Yippee!:j
I just want to ensure that I go with the best policy for me and don't waste money on things I will never use.
Thanks in advance!

Who forced you to buy from aviva?
You may have been mislead depending who did the forcing.
Read up on what you will be covered for if you buy these optional extras, and decide if they are worth it0 -

Thanks for the response Quentin,
It was when we took out our fixed rate mortgage with The Leeds Building Society, we got a better rate by having that particular mortgage product, but as part of it we had to have their own home insurance (underwritten by Aviva)
We have been paying over £50 per month, I have just checked with Aviva direct and they are quoting £16.73 per month for the same level of cover! Not to mention any cash back.
Do you know if they can do this, in terms of making you go with them in order to get a better APR? We were 'Sold' it in branch by one of their mortgage advisors.
Thanks:)0 -

Packaged deals are not common nowadays but do exist from time to time. They are allowed.
Normally, the deal is for the period of the tie in or even just one year. Some dont even check past the first month.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
