I was surprised to find when I wanted to compare insurance deal by job e.g. I work as a Specialist Support Assistant at school (like a Learning Support Assistant or Teaching/ Classroom Assistant but for a Deaf Student (s) it didnt have any of those titles-maybe I should have looked under something to do with BSL (sign language) but not sure what?!

Any suggestions please welcomed!

Classroom assistant is a classroom assistant. Whether its mainstream or specialist.

I am 54 years old, not working, not looking for work but not in receipt of any unemployment benefits and entirely self-supporting so not unreasonably consider myself to be 'Retired' although I am not yet drawing a pension.

However, I do receive Carer's Allowance for looking after my 82 year old father who is also resident at my address.

I am just starting my annual trawl through the motor insurance websites and have already hit on a snag with my first port of call viz my existing insurer MoreThan.

I had already put Retired in the box marked Main Occupation and was trying to put 'None' in the Part-time occupation box but that didn't seem to be an option and by coincidence when I pulled up the full list I happened to notice the option of 'Carer - Non-Professional' which I did not even realise existed.

So my question is does being my Dad's carer effectively place me in employment at least as far as the unnecessarily complicated world of motor insurance goes?

You leave the part time field blank on the MoreTh<n website as it is not a mandatory field.

For your main job it sounds like "Independent Means" is the most accurate description of you or House Wife/ Husband if you've a working partner that is the main way you afford not to work.

Ultimately check with the insurer in question to ensure they agree with your choice

    Thanks, I hadn't thought about that. :)

I've just ploughed on with MoreThan on the basis of Retired/Non-Prof Carer and have ended up with a quote more than £100 less than my MoreThan renewal notice.

Whilst it is true to say that - thanks largely to bequests from late relatives - I am of Independent Means, surely I am also Retired as the latter carries no age criterion. Surely anyone can retire so long as they can afford to?

Ultimately it is down to semantics and I think any insurer would struggle to say you miss lead them if you picked independent means rather than retired or visa versa.

PERSONALLY, I would say a "retired" person is drawing a pension and an independent means person isnt but I am sure some will want to say they are retired to brag because they are only 30 and others will never want to pick retired because itll make them admit to be old.

I actually feel more comfortable with 'retired', although I agree that it is probably all down to semantics as you say.

I have been googling legal definitions and the basic definition of a retired person is apparently someone who has left paid employment and is not intending to resume paid employment. Whereas someone of Independent Means seems to be someone in receipt of a private income, which in my case is not strictly accurate (and no I haven't robbed a bank!:D ).

Confusingly the UK Border Agency make reference to a Retired Person of Independent Means.

Thanks for your time and your input though. It is much appreciated.

Edit: After checking the various alternatives I have stuck with Morethan as they are still best value for money in my opinion and it would seem that selecting Non-Professional Carer as a part-time job has no bearing on the final premium as the website defaulted back to Retired/Retired each time I selected Non Professional Carer as a part time occupation.
