Because they refunded the wrong amount they had already taken, then charged us the correct amount, so we were out of pocket for the wrong amount?

But only for a few days whilst the refund was processed, so nothing illegal has happened and there's nothing you can do.

If you don't want it to happen again, pay with cash next time.

Understand about Internet purchases but it still allows you to check the amount before you proceed

A mistake that left us out of pocket until the refund went back in

My point I was asking is if it is illegal for them to take the payment before they had checked the signature as for fraud point of you I thought they would have to check and like online you should be able to change your order/amount

You don't need a signature for a transaction to debit, think about internet purchases ?

They refunded the wrong amount, then charged you the correct amount, wheres the problem ?

A simple mistake by the retailer, nothing illegal there. You can't change an amount once it's been entered, thats why they refunded it and entered the correct amount.

    Move on.

Still cannot see how you are out of pocket.
How much do you think you have lost?

My issue isn't about the refund that took place my issue is asking if it is illegal to take the payment before checking the signature

Not illegal. They only have to check the signature iaw their merchant agreement and to protect themselves from a chargeback. They should have waited though until they checked the signature before pressing the confirm button but they have refunded so you must be out of pocket by 2p at most. (unless it has taken you into overdraft territory in which case you should not really be using your card for purchases if you are sailing that close to the limit)

You can void but not change. The original transaction would still most probably be reserved and not available to you.

If you've worked in retail before, why would you think that this would be illegal ?

What are you hoping for here ?

What exactly would be the point in signing for it at all if the money is going to come out regardless? I guess the money may be reserved for a few days (maybe that's what happened here?), but I can't see why it would be physically taken without authorisation.

I do agree they are being utterly ridiculous though.
