Trips from Sorrento

Hi,

My fiance and I are going to Sorrento for a week in October, we're staying all inclusive so all our spending money can be used on trips out. Just wondered if any of you had done these trips and could give me an approximate guide to how much they cost. We will try and do as much as possible ourselves rather than using the organised trips in order to keep the costs down.

Was hoping to take a ferry to Capri and go on the chair lift to the top of the mountain.

We would like to visit Herculaneum and Vesuvius both on the same day.

OH would like to go out on a fishing boat for a few hours.

If we can afford it would also love to do a trip along the Amalfi Coast one day.

I want to make sure I take enough euros to do as many of these things as possible but money is tight so not sure we can afford all of them!! Any indications of costs would be very appreciated, Thank You!

You can get the train to Pompeii, And it's about 4 euro. Id advise getting a guide when you're there, it's huge and you'll missa lot if you just wander around yourself.

We had a driver to take us on the Amalfi drive to Positano and Ravello, but think you could get a bus. It's fab, enjoy it.

Get a bus, stand up and then enjoy the longest, scariest roller coaster ride you have ever had!

The train from Sorrento stops at Pompeii and Herculaneum(another great site, possibly better than Pompeii as not so devastated). Vesuvius can be reached if you get off at Herculaneum and there a numerous operators willing to take you up most of the way. Make sure you take decent walking shoes as it's a slog. Amalfi coast is easy on a day coach trip, although I wasn't very impressed with Amalfi itself, very, very touristy.

There is a cable car in Sorrento which is a great way to pass the time with fantastic views of Sorrento, Vesuvius and Naples harbour. They do an organised trip from Sorrento station but I found doing it under my own steam was much easier. Train along a few stops and buy the cable car tickets from the kiosk at the base.

Capri - hydrofoil is 18.80 euros each way. Don't waste too much time down by the harbour, get either the bus to Capri town or the funicular. 1.80 euros each way on either although the bus can get very squashed but that's part of the fun when you see the views along the road. Make sure it's a long day as you can do the Blue Grotto trip which you book down at the harbour. Oh, and don't believe the sign that says it's a 10 minute walk up/down the steps from the harbour to Capri town. It's at least 20 minutes downhill:rotfl:

Chairlift from Anacapri is about 20 euros return. Fantastic views again from the top although the beer is pretty expensive up there. Just great though as you 'float' about the residents and hotels gardens.

    Have a great time.

The bus from Sorrento goes to Positano, Amalfi and then on to Ravello, and doesn't cost very much.

Positano is stunning (probably best approached from the sea though). Be ready for a lot of steps if you are arriving by road. Ravello is also very pretty and probably the quietest of the three towns. Amalfi is okay, but not as nice as Positano and Ravello.

If you are planning to visit more than one of these towns when doing this trip by bus, then it's probably best to do the furthest away town latest in the day. The reason being is that the coaches back to Sorrento can get very full by the time they get to the final pick up point in Positano on the way back if you are trying to get one of the later coaches, and you might not get a seat, or even worse not be able to get on at all.
  • Thank You all for your advice!! I'm really looking forward to it :D I hadn't heard of the cable car before so I will definately look in to that too!
  • People keep telling us that the amalfi coast is beautiful viewed from the sea so one of our ideas is to mainly travel by bus but to go back from positano to sorrento by boat. Has anyone on here done this before. Just wondered if there were lots of boats between positano and sorrento and if they were reasonable priced??
